In 1897 Alex Stewart, the great grandfather of Stewarts’ current Managing Director, Charlie P. W. Stewart, commenced practising law in Newtownards.

The practice was known as Alexander Stewart and provided legal services to the people of Newtownards and its rural environs for many years. In 1940 Alex Stewart was succeeded by his son William C. Stewart who continued to practice under the name of Alex Stewart and Son until 1974, when the practice was in turn passed to his son, Charles E. Stewart.

In 1999, following a restructuring and rebranding, the practice commenced trading as a partnership under the name of Stewarts Solicitors. In 2008 Norman Scott, who had practised for many years as Senior Partner in F.J. Orr & Company, joined Stewarts. Charlie Stewart joined Stewarts in 2007.



On 2nd September 2013 Stewarts Solicitors became incorporated pursuant to the Solicitors’ (Incorporated Practice) Regulations 2007 (‘the Regulations’) of the Law Society of Northern Ireland. In 2015 John Campbell of Campbell Bates & Company Solicitors joined the firm and Stewarts once again opened a branch in the town of Comber, having previously operated a small office in the town for many years. The Ballymena branch was expanded in 2019 with the addition of Jacqueline Russell and Helen Russell, formerly trading as James L. Russell & Son Solicitors - a fourth generation firm of Ballymena solicitors.

In May 2022 Charles E. Stewart passed away after a period of illness having practiced as a solicitor in Newtownards for more than fifty years. His son Charlie carries on the Stewart family tradition in legal practice.
